Inaugural Gowns Through the Years

Hey!  Were you aware that a little somethin’ somethin’ is happening this Monday?  Well, yes, yes, it is my garbage pickup day. But, besides that? It is the official day of the inauguration of President Barack Obama for his second term as President of the United States!

So, with Inauguration Day fast approaching, let’s focus on the most important issue of that historic day:  Michelle Obama’s inaugural gown! What? Oh, well I guess the swearing in and all that jazz is mighty important too, but I like seeing the gorgeous gowns and tuxedos, etc., which the main event brings.  Please don’t call me shallow.

To keep us entertained until the big reveal of the First Lady’s gown, I thought we could take a fun little jaunt down that inauguration road and see what other first ladies have donned over the years.  Come along with me; this is pretty entertaining!

Helen Taft, 1909

Grace Coolidge and Florence Harding, 1921

Eleanor Roosevelt, 1941

Bess Truman, 1949

Mamie Eisenhower, 1953

Jacqueline Kennedy, 1961

Lady Bird Johnson, 1965

Pat Nixon, 1973

Rosalynn and Amy Carter, 1977

Nancy Reagan, 1981

Barbara Bush, 1989

Hillary Clinton, 1993

Laura Bush, 2001

Barbara, Jenna, and Laura Bush 2005

Michelle Obama, 2009

Kind of fun to see how the styles change throughout the decades, isn’t it?!  Do you think there will ever be a day when a future first lady shows up looking like a train wreck, what with some of the latest celeb styles and all? I think Tim Gunn and Clinton Kelly would probably have a stroke and a heart attack, respectively.

And, my gift to my fellow pinners–a spiffy collage you can pin to your “My Next Inaugural Gown” board!  (I’m sure you’ve got one, right?)

Chime in and let us know which inaugural gown is your fave!

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that Nancy Reagan and Michelle Obama’s dresses are similar?
